Native Habitat:
Streambanks, floodplains, wet forest margins, riparian corridors, and moist thickets throughout western North America, including the Willamette Valley. Prefers fertile soils with reliable moisture and is commonly found along rivers and seasonal waterways.

Growth Habit & Mature Size:
Deciduous shrub, typically 6–20 feet tall and equally wide, with arching branches and distinctive exfoliating bark that peels in multiple layers. Leaves are three- to five-lobed and maple-like. Produces dense clusters of white to pale pink flowers followed by reddish-brown seed capsules that persist into fall.
Light & Soil Requirements:
Full sun to partial shade; thrives in moist, well-drained to seasonally wet soils. Adaptable to clay, loam, and silty soils and tolerant of periodic flooding.
