  • Native Habitat:

    Open forests, meadows, and subalpine slopes in western North America, including the Willamette Valley region. Prefers well-drained soils in sunny to partially shaded sites.

     

    Bloom Time:

    June – September

     

    Growth Habit & Mature Size:

    Perennial herb, 1–3 feet tall, forming clumps with basal leaves and slender, erect stems. Produces daisy-like flowers with lavender to purple rays and yellow centers.

     

    Light & Soil Requirements:

    Full sun to partial shade; thrives in well-drained sandy, loamy, or rocky soils. Tolerates moderate drought once established.

     

    Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

    Camassia quamash, Achillea millefolium, Eriophyllum lanatum, Sidalcea campestris, Festuca roemeri.

     

    Urban Garden Function:

    Provides vibrant seasonal color and vertical interest in urban meadows, pollinator gardens, and naturalized landscapes. Works well in layered plantings with grasses and other wildflowers, enhancing both ecological function and visual appeal.

     

    Wildlife Supported:

    Flowers attract native bees, bumblebees (Bombus spp.), and butterflies. Dense foliage provides cover for small insects and supports pollinator communities.

     

    Historical Use:

    Used by Indigenous peoples for minor medicinal purposes and valued ornamentally in meadow-style and naturalized plantings.
