Native Habitat:

Wet meadows, streambanks, and moist open areas.

 

Bloom Time:

June – August

 

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Perennial herb, 1–2 feet tall, with square stems, aromatic leaves, and spreading rhizomes. Produces spikes of small purple to lavender flowers.

 

Light & Soil Requirements:

Full sun to partial shade; thrives in moist, fertile soils with good drainage. Prefers consistently damp conditions.

 

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Camassia leichtlinii, Achillea millefolium, Sidalcea campestris, Festuca roemeri, Eriophyllum lanatum.

 

Urban Garden Function:

Adds fragrant foliage, seasonal flowers, and groundcover to urban gardens, pollinator gardens, and naturalized wetland-inspired landscapes. Works well in layered plantings and along stream edges or rain gardens.

 

Wildlife Supported:

Flowers attract native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Dense foliage provides shelter for insects and small invertebrates.

 

Historical Use:

Leaves and stems were used by Indigenous peoples for medicinal and culinary purposes; valued ornamentally for fragrance and pollinator support in garden plantings.
