Native Habitat:

Moist streambanks, seeps, and wet meadows.

 

Bloom Time:

April – August

 

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Perennial herb, 6–18 inches tall, with basal and stem leaves. Produces tubular yellow flowers often spotted with red in clusters along the stems.

 

Light & Soil Requirements:

Full sun to partial shade; thrives in moist, fertile, well-drained to saturated soils. Prefers consistently damp conditions.

 

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Camassia leichtlinii, Tolmiea menziesii, Carex obnupta, Achlys triphylla, Polystichum munitum.

 

Urban Garden Function:

Adds early- to mid-season color, delicate flowers, and layered texture to urban rain gardens, riparian plantings, and naturalized moist landscapes. Works well in shallow water edges and habitat-focused gardens.

 

Wildlife Supported:

Flowers attract native bees, hummingbirds, and small butterflies. Dense foliage provides shelter for insects and small invertebrates.

 

Historical Use:

Used by Indigenous peoples for minor medicinal purposes; valued ornamentally in naturalized, wetland-inspired, and pollinator-friendly gardens.
