Growth Habit & Mature Size:
Perennial herb, 4–12 inches tall, with basal heart-shaped leaves and delicate blue to violet flowers. Stems are slender, with single flowers rising above the foliage.
Light & Soil Requirements:
Partial shade to full sun; thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils. Prefers cool, shaded to partially sunny microhabitats.
Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:
Polystichum munitum, Tolmiea menziesii, Athyrium filix-femina, Adiantum pedatum, Camassia leichtlinii.
Urban Garden Function:
Provides low-growing groundcover, early spring color, and woodland aesthetic to shaded urban gardens, naturalized landscapes, and layered plantings. Works well as an understory plant beneath trees and shrubs, enhancing habitat and garden texture.
