Native Habitat:

Moist forests, streambanks, and shaded slopes.

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Perennial herb, 4–12 inches tall, with basal, heart-shaped to rounded leaves. Produces small, bright yellow flowers with contrasting darker veins.

 

Light & Soil Requirements:

Partial shade to full shade; thrives in moist, humus-rich soils. Prefers cool, shaded microhabitats near streams or moist understory areas.

 

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Polystichum munitum, Tolmiea menziesii, Athyrium filix-femina, Adiantum pedatum, Camassia leichtlinii.

 

Urban Garden Function:

Adds early spring color, low-growing groundcover, and woodland interest to shaded urban gardens, naturalized landscapes, and understory plantings. Works well beneath shrubs and trees in layered native garden designs.

 

Wildlife Supported:

Flowers attract small native bees and other early-season pollinators. Basal foliage provides shelter for insects and small ground-dwelling invertebrates.

 

Historical Use:

Used ornamentally for its early bright flowers and delicate foliage; valued in shaded, woodland-style, and naturalized garden settings.
