Native Habitat:

Moist open forests, forest edges, and grassy slopes in western North America, including the Willamette Valley. Prefers well-drained soils and partial shade.

Bloom Time:

March – May

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Perennial bulb, 1–2 feet tall, with narrow basal leaves and erect stems. Produces nodding, bell-shaped flowers that are mottled purple and green, giving a checkerboard appearance.

Light & Soil Requirements:

Partial shade; thrives in moist, well-drained soils with high organic content. Tolerates seasonal wetness but not waterlogged soils.

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Camassia quamash, Achillea millefolium, Eriophyllum lanatum, Tolmiea menziesii, Sidalcea campestris.

Urban Garden Function:

Adds early-season color and architectural interest to urban meadows, woodland-inspired landscapes, and naturalized gardens. Its striking nodding flowers provide visual focal points and work well in layered native plantings with ferns and shade-tolerant perennials.

Wildlife Supported:

Flowers attract native bees, small butterflies, and other pollinators. Dense foliage provides shelter for ground-dwelling insects and microfauna.

Historical Use:

Bulbs were occasionally used by Indigenous peoples for food, though preparation was required to remove bitter compounds; valued ornamentally in naturalized and woodland gardens.
