Growth Habit & Mature Size:
Perennial herb, 2–5 feet tall, with erect, branching stems and opposite, ovate leaves. Produces clusters of small, tubular reddish-brown flowers along upper stems.
Light & Soil Requirements:
Partial to full shade; thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Prefers cool, shaded conditions but tolerates some sun in sheltered sites.
Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:
Polystichum munitum, Tolmiea menziesii, Athyrium filix-femina, Adiantum pedatum, Camassia leichtlinii.
Urban Garden Function:
Provides vertical structure, subtle floral interest, and habitat value in shaded urban gardens, woodland-inspired landscapes, and naturalized plantings. Works well as an understory plant, enhancing layered native garden design.
Wildlife Supported:
