Native Habitat:

Moist, shaded forests, streambanks, and riparian areas throughout North America, including the Willamette Valley. Prefers cool, protected forest understories.

 

Bloom Time:

Non-flowering fern; reproduces via spores released from the undersides of fronds in summer.

 

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Deciduous fern forming dense clumps, 2–3 feet tall, with finely divided, graceful fronds that arch outward from a central crown. Spreads slowly by creeping rhizomes.

 

Light & Soil Requirements:

Partial to full shade; rich, moist, well-drained soils high in organic matter. Prefers consistently damp environments.

 

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Adiantum pedatum, Polystichum munitum, Tolmiea menziesii, Tellima grandiflora, Achlys triphylla.

 

Urban Garden Function:

Adds soft, feathery texture and lush greenery to shaded urban gardens, rain gardens, and woodland-inspired plantings. Works well as groundcover under trees, along pathways, or layered with other shade perennials, providing visual continuity and seasonal structure in low-light areas.

 

Wildlife Supported:

Provides microhabitats for ground-dwelling insects, amphibians, and small invertebrates. Fronds offer shelter and moisture retention for beneficial soil organisms.
