Native Habitat:

Coastal bluffs, dunes, and open rocky areas along the Pacific Coast, including parts of the Willamette Valley. Prefers well-drained soils and moderate coastal exposure.

 

Bloom Time:

April – July

 

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Perennial herb, 6–18 inches tall, forming low mats or clumps. Produces slender stems with basal leaves and daisy-like flowers in shades of purple to lavender with yellow centers.

 

Light & Soil Requirements:

Full sun; thrives in sandy, rocky, or loamy soils with good drainage. Tolerates salt spray and coastal winds.

 

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Festuca roemeri, Camassia quamash, Achillea millefolium, Eriophyllum lanatum, Arctostaphylos columbiana.

 

Urban Garden Function:

Excellent for rock gardens, coastal-themed urban landscapes, green roofs, and low-maintenance sunny borders. Provides seasonal color and texture while stabilizing soil in exposed sites. Works well in pollinator gardens and naturalized plantings.

 

Wildlife Supported:

Flowers attract native bees, small butterflies, and other pollinators. Dense mats offer cover for insects and beneficial ground-dwelling arthropods.

 

Historical Use:

Used by Indigenous peoples for minor medicinal purposes and as an ornamental plant.
