Moist forests, shaded slopes, and riparian areas.

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Perennial herb, 12–24 inches tall, with basal, rounded, scalloped leaves and erect flowering stems. Produces clusters of small, bell-shaped greenish to pink flowers with fringed petals.

 

Light & Soil Requirements:

Partial to full shade; thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils. Prefers consistently damp, shaded conditions.

 

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Polystichum munitum, Tolmiea menziesii, Athyrium filix-femina, Adiantum pedatum, Camassia leichtlinii.

 

Urban Garden Function:

Provides layered foliage, delicate spring flowers, and shaded garden interest in urban woodlands, naturalized landscapes, and pollinator-friendly plantings. Works well as an understory groundcover or layered planting beneath trees and shrubs.
