Native Habitat:

Moist forests, shaded slopes, and riparian areas.

Growth Habit & Mature Size:

Perennial herb, 6–12 inches tall, with basal clumps of trifoliate, finely divided leaves. Produces delicate, nodding white flowers with petals reflexed backward, giving the characteristic “inside-out” appearance.

 

Light & Soil Requirements:

Partial to full shade; thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils. Prefers consistently cool and shaded conditions.

 

Willamette Valley Native Companion Plants:

Polystichum munitum, Tolmiea menziesii, Athyrium filix-femina, Adiantum pedatum, Tiarella trifoliata.

 

Urban Garden Function:

Adds low-growing groundcover, delicate floral interest, and woodland texture to shaded urban gardens, naturalized landscapes, and layered plantings. Works well as an understory plant beneath trees and shrubs.

 

Wildlife Supported:

Flowers attract small native bees and flies. Dense basal foliage provides shelter for insects and small ground-dwelling invertebrates.

 

Historical Use:

Used ornamentally for its delicate flowers and unique form; valued in shaded, naturalized, and woodland-style gardens.
